Look for a 25-pin "straight through extension" cable, those should for sure run all of the connections.
I usually use a printer cable, since they have connections to all of the pins on the PC that are actually active.
Here is a possible candidate for a printer cable. (http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.asp?EDC=033061)
Here is an example of a straight through extension cable. (http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.asp?EDC=088219)
You should be able to find equivalent cables locally.

It should not be a problem. Leave the outer shield unconnected at the LCD end to help protect against (electrical) noise. You will need to supply power to the backlight and LCD also.

Gotcha I know I have to run power to the LEDs and I was wondering if they can be powered completely separate from the LCD because in the generic schematic floating around it shows some connectivity between them
