I've been tracking this thread over at Race Sim Central. I've finally ordered a CrystalFontz USB LCD and I'm trying to track down the creator of this plug-in. Can anyone here help?

Thanks in advance!

Quote from Race Sim Central Forums:

Support for CrystalControl2 is all done! :leet:
Not public yet, but ill give the necessary plugin files to anyone who wants to get it going now.

Quick Photo:
http://www.overclockers.com.au/~mwp/temp/rfactor/example1.jpg

Here is a couple of examples videos with rFactor and two Crystalfontz 634 units:

V8s, Adel. LCDs are showing Car Info & Lap/Race Info.
http://www.overclockers.com.au/~mwp/temp/rfactor/rf-cc2-adel.avi

HRC, Pikes Peak. LCDs are showing Car Info & Steering Wheel input info (in order, RPM, steering-wheel angle, accel pedal pos, brake pedal pos).
http://www.overclockers.com.au/~mwp/temp/rfactor/rf-cc2-pikes.avi

CrystalControl2 can display any of the 41 available rFactor data to any number of LCDs.
All easily setup using the screen editor.

That would be me... :)

The 3 plugin files are attached.
The "rFactorCC2Plugin.dll" goes in your rFactor plugin directory.
The other two, go in with the rest of your CC2 plugins.

Let me know if you have any problems.

Cheers mate!

I've got alot of my league members interested in this and I'm the guinea pig. I'm sure it's going to work out smoothly. The CrystalControl2 software was very intuitive.

I'm having some issue with the ZIP file. It's returning a corruption error message when using WinZIP. Using the 'repair' tool in winRAR, I was able view it and to extract the cc2_rFactor.dll, but the rFactorCC2Plugin.dll was corrupt and there wasn't a third file in the package.

Also, there's been a few others interested over in the RSC thread recently. It might be good to pop in there with info (or direct them here) as this is a very well done product and I'm sure others will find interest in it once more people try it out.

Do NOT d/l from IE. Use Firefox or another browser to d/l. Or d/l and use 7-zip, as this is usually what CCadmin uses to create zip files, IIRC.

Same corruption shows in 7-Zip.

I just downloaded the same files from Firefox and extracted with Winzip. No problems whatsoever, as JC says its often ie that is the problem with the downloads. This has been going on some time with certain sites.

Firefox here (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/)

@ Reider: Thanks for confirmation that the file is intact! Got it now. :D

@ CCAdmin: So once I confirm all is well and things work properly, is it ok if I make these plug-ins available in the RaceSimCentral thread?

So, I am trying to look at those AVI files, and WMP complains that it can't find the codec. Is there a specific codec needed? Is there a link for downloading the codec?

Well call me a rookie CrystalFontz user, but I'm at a loss. :confused: I've extracted the dll's (one into rFactor's plugins folder, the other two into "Programs Files/CrystalControl") and I've yet to see any rFactor data under available information in the CC2 screen configuration page. Am I missing a something? I've been seaching the forums for the past hour and can't seem to find anything to help get me any further along.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and and I apologize in advance for being a PITA. ;)

I`m running Vista here, I pasted the rFactorCC2Plugin.dll into the C:\Program Files\CrystalControl2\extras\rfactor folder. I then pasted the other two into C:\Program Files\CrystalControl2 with CC2 temporarily stopped......

I then restarted CC2 and there were available items in the Rfactor category to place into a screen. I did not test further as I no longer have rfactor installed. Though I do have the disk here. There are two CC2 files, you have to ensure you paste the correct one into the rfactor folder, as stated by admin and shown above.

My version of CC2 is a test version with the rFactor plugin included. However, I took a chance and pasted the supplied files over the top of the existing ones to replace them. This should make it equal to yours and have the same liabilities when it comes to working or not.

Sigh. Fair warning: Rhetorical questions ahead.

1) Why would CC Admin post an AVI with a codec not supported by MS WMP?

2) Why would some software (that CC Admin used) output an AVI that MS WMP can't understand?

3) Why would whoever it is that made the codec not make it available to MS WMP?

I guess I'll try a converter.

4) Why would a converter know how to handle this AVI, when MS WMP can't.

It's all a matter of codecs. I have the FFDShow codec pack installed and the videos play fine for me in WMP, Winamp, VirtualDub, pretty much any windows media playing app.

reider
2007/12/21, 04:28 AM
AVI`s can be made with two slightly different media types (actually theirs more than two but two in particular are mentioned), one is the older codec that causes the problem and the other is the newer more acceptable format. So, at one time the AVI would have worked, now in the modern world we all know and love it will not-cos they`re always moving the goalposts. I always have a really early version of media changer devised to use in DOS. I could modernise it but have grown quite attached to it, using it in a DOS window. Now, if I could just find where I put it ;)

The codec is just a compressor/decompressor so nothing mind blowing, just that they have to keep damn changing things. If you have the codec that reads the format then it works. If you don`t, then you first have to diagnose which codec you need, then locate it, then install it. Or install the pack that Heffo mentions. Sometimes its just easier and quicker to change the format to something else. MS don`t include the codec because their are so many variants.

Just a quick thanks to reider for the help. rFactor itself has a plugin folder for external hardware plugins and so I naturally assumed that was the rFactor/plugin directory to be used. Once that was squared away things progressed rapidly. The LCD is up and working and its everything I had hoped it would be. Its a very cool hardware option for us sim-racers!

Two follow-up/feature requests:

1. Can the plug-in in the future have more Imperial options for fuel, water, and oil temperatures?

2. Is it possible to to use unique characters and make a bar graph-style tachometer (in this case, just using solid character blocks that would progress from left to right as rpm's climbed)?

Thanks again for everyone's help! :D

This is one for admin to look at, hopefully not much of a problem, just a time issue.

This shouldn`t be a problem. Something along the lines of one of the present Winamp screens that Dark produced in the good old days, with the left and right Spectrum Anyliser. Then amend the screen display to suit the RPM as input data instead of sound maybe.

Woah, seems ive got behind on this thread... sorry all.

The AVI was encoded with mencoder which will play on all normal DIVX players, but it seems i set the FOURCC wrong, so not many (ie, players not up to date, like WMP :rolleyes: ) dont recognize it :(
Installing "ffdshow" (http://www.free-codecs.com/FFDShow_download.htm) is the best idea, as its the only video/audio codec youll ever need anyway (it plays everything!!).

1. Can the plug-in in the future have more Imperial options for fuel, water, and oil temperatures?

Can do, its a busy xmas/jan for me though, so may not happen for a while, sorry :(

2. Is it possible to to use unique characters and make a bar graph-style tachometer (in this case, just using solid character blocks that would progress from left to right as rpm's climbed)?

You mean like in the example videos?
If that is what you mean, then yes :)

In the screen editor, use the "horizontal bargraph".
- Set the bargraph length
- For the "bar position", use "plugin value", then hit the select button.
- Select the rfactor plugin information you wish to display.
- Set the ending position number value to the max value you would display (ie, 12000 for RPM).
Leave the other options for the moment, and hit ok.
The other options (esp character options) are needed if you wish to display more than 1 bargraph on a screen.

BTW... as an easy way to test the display, run the game in a small window, instead of in full screen, start a race, then pause the game and switch over to CC2, then edit your screens.
Itll then show you real game information. It makes it easier to layout the screens.

NP! Its completely understandable. I'm just thrilled to have it all working. Like I said, I'm the guinea pig for this project and I can't wait to report back to the guys at rf-RACER.com. I have to admit, the thing that really makes this a fantastic option is its very memory and processor friendly. I've yet to notice any depreciable drop in FPS while running the LCD. This can't always be said of other display options.

And also, thanks for the bargraph tip. Worked perfectly!

Hi CC2 Admin.

In my humble opinion, in the list of rF parameters you must to add, if it's possible, tyre and brake temp and the time win or lost in the last lap. The diference betwen actual lap and last lap in the finish line (+0.22 or -1.08 for example).

In January I try to buy a LCD634 and start to enjoy your fantastic job.

Congratulations.

I can only show the information that rFactor supplies to the plugins.
Unfortunately, tyre & brake temps are not among those.

I,m surprised. Brake & Tyre temp are no avalaible from rFactor to run with your plug?
You try to ask to ISI (Image Sapace Inc)? they are very helpful and answer most of the emails received.

They like to help the developer comunity.

Many thanks for making this plugin!

I purchased two 634 LCD's and configured some screens with no problem. I'd be cool if we could export screens from CC2 to share with others. I'll post photos of mine if anyone is interested.

I would consider purchasing some more and suggesting them to many others if we could just get a few more parameters. I know some of these probably arent available:

Oil, water,fuel, ambient and track temperatures in Imperial measurements
Projected laps with remaining fuel
Driver with best lap and his laptime
Sector times and sector time difference
Brake and tire temps

Also, have the "Max number of laps" say "NA" during practice and warmup, instead of the large number it currently displays

All great suggestions Brad.

Add to that a key mapping feature for cycling through your various screen designs with a press of a botton on your steering wheel. I believe that was in the origianl CC software.

BTW: I'm really loving the LCD in my sim-racing cockpit. Like Brad, I'll post some pix soon.

I'm using Windows XP SP2 and running CrystalControl2 to control a CF634. The software is controlling the CF634 data correctly except for rFactor data.

I start rFactor version 1.250 and choose a car and track.

Once I installed the plugins, I could see the rFactor options and added Engine Speed, Speed (MPH) and Lap Time on the separate horizontal lines of the display configuration.

Any data screen that I build in CC2 results in seeing 'NA' where the data should be when driving in rFactor. I've restarted Windows and restarted the CrystalControl2 multiple times.

rFactor is installed at L:\Program Files\rFactor (Does it have to be installed to the C:\ drive for this to work?)

I installed the rFactor CrystalControl2 plugins as follows:

C:\Program Files\CrystalControl2\extras\rFactor-plugin\rFactorCC2Plugin.dll
(Does this directory need to be a certain name?)

C:\Program Files\CrystalControl2\cc2rfactor.dll
C:\Program Files\CrystalControl2\se_rfactor.dll

Is this installation correct?
How is the connection made between CrystalControl2, the rFactor plugin and the rFactor telemetry?
Does the rFactor telemetry need to be started somehow or is it always on once the sim is being driven?

Are there some options for debugging this? I'm fairly proficient with PCs and can usually figure things out.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Read the 2nd post again.

The "rFactorCC2Plugin.dll" goes in your rFactor plugin directory.

That would be L:\Program Files\rFactor\??. I don't use rFactor, I assume that the complete listing would be L:\Program Files\rFactor\plugins?

I hope this helps.

I know its still very early in the new year, but I'm just a little worried that the future plugin development may get forgotten. I appreciate all the work done on it so far. I bought two LCD's just for this, and I'm worried that I'm not going to have all I expected, mainly in regards to the imperial measurements.

If it turns out you wont have time to work on it for awhile, and when you'll be able to is indeterminate, is it possible to make the source code public? I'm far from the type of developer to carry on the work, but would do everything I could to try to work on it or find someone who can, to feel more comfortable with the investment and enjoyment with the LCD's.

Thanks!

Great, sounds good. If/when it gets to the point that it needs to be passed off for development, hopefully someone who is reading this and interested in it, has the necessary skills and and work on it. Seems like there would be more people interested in this, but I guess its due to the cost of the LCD's.

Right now I'm struggling to come up with a mount for 2 of the enclosed 634's on a Playseat Evolution, so that they are closer to eye level.

Thanks again..

Attached is the new version of the plugin files...
It adds wheel temps, wheel pressures, brake temps, lap time comparison and some of the displayed information has been reformatted to look better.

Due to some of the changes, some of the data in your existing rFactor screens may no longer work.
Delete these items, and re-add them from the list.

Let me know what you think.

Copy the files into the same locations as described earlier in this thread.
Dont forget to stop the CC2 service before doing so.

Oh, i forgot to add... it also now does metric->imperial conversions.
It defaults to metric.

To change it to imperial, do the following...
Create a file called "cc2_rfactor.ini" in the same location as the other CC2 INI files.
In the "cc2_rfactor.ini" file, enter:

[general]
metric=0

You can already do this with what we have. I just set it up myself, but for some reason if I go back and edit a screen after I set up the keyboard shortcut to switch screens, the entries in cc2_keyboard.ini and cc2_service.ini for the keyboard event are gone.

Try these steps:

1. Copy \CrystalControl2\extras\keyboard-dll\key_export.dll and put in your windows\system32 folder
2. Create a new file \CrystalControl2\cc2_keyboard.ini if it doesnt exist
3. Use \CrystalControl2\extras\key-tester\keytest.exe to get the hex code for the keyboard key(s) you want to use
4. Edit cc2_keyboard.ini to have the following. I'm using F12 to flip through screens which is mapped to a button on the racing wheel with the Logitech Profiler

[options]

[input00]
id=2110068363
repeat=250
key0=0x0058
key1=0

5. Add the following after the module identification section in cc2_service.ini (mine is the second LCD, so its m01

[m01-event00]
if_type=1
if=2110068363
cond=0
to=1
do_type=9
do=1

My module identification section looks like this:

[m01]
id=1873284259
module_name="Crystalfontz 634"
options=0
screen_sel=0
alt_enabled=0
brightness=96
contrast=63
dkc_disable=0
transition_random=0
transition_length=500

6. Start up or restart CC2 service and CC2 configure

If you have any trouble, restart to ensure key_export.dll is loading and check your Event Viewer

I'll post some screenshots and ini's of the 5 screens on two LCD's I created so far shortly

I dont think I missed anything, but these threads are what helped me:

Woohoo thanks for the quick update.

I attached an image of 5 screens I'm using and the ini file.

On a side note, the plugin doesnt seem to be very stable in offline races. I never race offline, but could consistently make rfactor crash with the plugin dll as the cause in the drwatson message, by alt-tabbing during a race, then quitting the race. Havent had any problems at all online while alt-tabbing, but also dont ever do it while in the car.

Interesting... the crash doesnt happen when the plugin isnt installed?
I test setting up screens by setting the rFactor res to 800x600 and windowed (not full-screen).
Then its possible to leave the screen-editor window open next to the rFactor game window while racing, and just move the mouse out and click on the screen editor when you need to change something.
I did this a lot during devel & testing of the plugins as well and never had any problems.

I'm shure he uses the CC2 soft and Pluggins. Don't you?

It's possible to change or assign the LCD screens with the rotary positions?
maybe with Brad Mill's Keyboard instructions?

Sorry by my poor english

By the looks of those videos, he doesn't use CC2 for the data.

The whole unit looks to be a custom built job, and quite a good one at that. It's a shame it's modeled after the wheel in an F1 car, give me the V8 supercars any day!

The LCD looks to be an OLED display, it's much too bright and clear on the video which rules out being a 63x unit.

CrystalControl Admin

Its not OLED, they are just plain old segmented LED displays.
There are quite a few people making them up for rFactor & LFS it seems.

Heffo

I wasn't referring to the 7-Seg LED unit. I meant the 20x4 Yellow on Black LCD display below the 7-Seg gear indicator on the F1 wheel.

Ahh, sorry yeah, does look like an OLED display.

Hi guys!
I just stumbled over this thread,forum,website! yesterday and I saw Racer Alex's name (we've raced together) and thought, well... let me take a closer look :) Hi Alex! tell Gonzo I said Yo!
Wow what a great rFactor add-on!
I played w/ the software all day yesterday configuring it just the way I want my screen to look.
I want to order the Black screen w/ the yellow letters but it says it won't be available till June 15th.(XE634BK-YMC-KU)

I may order another color just to tide me over till the one I want comes in:)

I do have a question...I see that "Session Time" is one of the options but is it possible to have the "Race Clock" available? (The one that counts down the time left in the race)
I belong to a league that runs an ILMS series (Champion Motorsports) and we run all "Timed events" (6 hour,3 hour,90 minute and 60 minute events).
Having the countdown clock and the fuel remaining on the one little screen would be perfect for my application:)
Thanks,and Hello!

Email sales@crystalfontz.com to see what can be done about your order.

As for session time remaining, a quick look says that i can do it as session end time is supplied.
Ill look into it more sometime soon... cant say when at the moment :(

First off, a HUGE thanks for CC Admin and everyone else at Crystalfontz for enabling rF support for the LCDs. This is truly one of the great add-ons!

I have had the Crystalfontz LCD since mid December and since that time have hardly run any actual race sessions (practice mostly). So, I just noticed this today for the first time while doing some graphics tweaking. If I "esc" out of a race session rF causes an error and shuts down. If I "esc" out of any other session (practice, qual, or warmup) it works fine. Alt-tabbing makes no difference on my machine - the behavior is the same regardless of whether I alt-tab first or not. If I stop the CrystalControl2 service from the tray icon the issue goes away.

I can also attest that this was an issue with the previous CC2 software and rF plugins. In fact, tracking this error to the CC2 service in the first place is what prompted me to investigate and upgrade to the latest CC2 software and rF plugins.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the descriptions of the exiting-race issue.
Ill look into it this week when i spend some time on CC2 updates (as well as the session time remaining).

I did all the testing of the plugin in offline racing, and havent had the problem.
Ill try a few more combinations, see if i can get it to happen. If i can, and replicate it, ill be able to fix it.

You do a great work but maybe is a good idea add to the RAR a readme file with the version number of the pluggin and what's new. But I understand you take a lot of your free time doing this for the community.

Try to do a shortcut to your rFactor.exe with this line :
"C:\games\rFactor\rFactor.exe +trace=1"

You must write your path game and a space between "exe" and "+"

This creates a log file named trace in your Userdata/log folder.

Maybe you can give this info to CC2admin...

Good luck

The "x" key would be perfect :)
I will prolly have at least 4 or 5 screens when I'm done.
I already put the .dll file in my sys32 folder.
Thanks again!:)

Edit..actually if this can be done..I would like to have 2 keys for scrolling.."x" for scrolling forward and "c" for scrolling back through the screens because this will be controlled w/ a digital rotory encoder (knob) :)
And a key to turn the LCD off and on "v" key would be fine :)

Well..I just tried putting them in my main directory and it just crashed CC2 and I had to reboot to get the screen on again :(
There has got to be a better way to do this.
I just uninstalled CC2 and then reinstalled a brand new clean install, tried it again and got same results :(

CrystalControl Admin
2008/06/04, 09:22 PM
Sounds like a clean install is required.
Uninstall CC2, Reboot, then delete the CrystalControl2 directory (if it still exisit).
Reinstall CC2, reboot, then using the config app setup your LCD and load the simple Time-Date screen.

If that all works ok... go from there in remaking your rFactor screens.

Try using the CC2 Key Generator to generate a series on new ids too. I just reinstalled rfactor and mine didn`t work either. So I generated new ids, took the top two or any two at random from the list. Then pasted the top one into the keyboard.ini first location and then the second one into the second location. I matched these numbers in the cc2_service.ini ~This is where my key gen is....C:\Program Files\CrystalControl2\extras\random-id-gen

e.g. Keyboard.ini

[input00]
;id for reported event
id=2726938156
;key repeat rate in milliseconds
repeat=250
;key codes are in hex (Alt + Down here)
key0=0x002E
key1=0
key2=0

[input01]
;id for reported event
id=2279952554
;key repeat rate in milliseconds
repeat=250
;key codes are in hex (Alt + Down here)
key0=0x002D
key1=0
key2=0

My first and second new generated IDs were used here with the ones in bold. First number to the top one and second number to the next one. Then this has to be matched in the service.ini Don`t use these numbers, use the generator to get your own, then make sure both places in bold have the same numbers in the same order, while CC2 is stopped. Do not change the id number in blue since this is the module id number and stops that module being addressed by CC2. Save, restart CC2 and check again.

e.g. Service.ini

I have the screen scroll working in Vista for the rFactor setup, nothing working for rFactor itself but I`ll look at that again when I have a chance. Did you mean this rFactor scroll or a general one for any screens you have loaded? If its the rFactor scroll then everything you need is in this thread, I have UAC control turned off in Vista now too, so that may make a difference.
