Here is the same image but it is shown using the limited "grey scale" feature of the S1D13305 (SED1330). This mode allows a pixel to be 100% 50% or 0%. The mode is composed of two full-sized graphic planes. The 100 percent pixels are set on one plane and the 50% pixels are set on the second plane. The second plane is modulated by the controller at 17Hz with a 50% duty cycle. This makes a one-level gray scale but does introduce some flickering of the 50% pixels.

A plane can be set to show text. This picture shows the 5x7 font that is built in to the S1D13305 (SED1330) controller. You can also define your own font in the controller's ram and have it displayed on a plane. Text can also be rendered by the host on the graphic planes.
