Often the term &ldquo;sunlight readable&rdquo; is used in reference to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/tft\/\" target=\"_self\" title='TFT stands for Thin Film Transistor. TFTs are also known as \"Active Matrix TFT LCD modules\" and have an array of these thin film transistors fabricated on the glass that makes the LCD. There is one of these transistors for each pixel on the LCD. For a typical small color TFT LCD with a resolution&hellip;' class=\"encyclopedia\">TFT<\/a> display having a super-bright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/backlight\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"A backlight is used behind the LCD glass to allow the LCM to be read in dark conditions. The vast majority of backlights are now LED. Historically there were also EL (electroluminescent) and CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light) backlights, but as LED efficiency has increased and cost has decreased, EL and CCFL backlights have all&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">backlight<\/a> that overpowers the light of the sun to be visible. This typically occurs around 800 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/nits\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"What are nits? Essentially, nits are a measure of brightness. Of course, there's more: A nit is a unit of a display's luminance. The SI unit is the candela per square meter (cd\/m2). One nit is one cd\/m2. A candela is the SI unit for luminous intensity and one candela approximately equals the intensity of&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">nits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, other display technologies achieve sunlight readable status without trying to overpower the sun. For instance, purely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/reflective-lcd\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"A reflective LCD depends on having sufficient ambient light to reflect in order to be read. A reflective LCD does not have a backlight and does not make any light on its own. &nbsp; A reflective LCD can be seen well in any lighting situation where you could read text on a paper, they are&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">reflective<\/a> displays, like epapers, are sunlight readable without a backlight. Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/transflective-lcd\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"TRANSFLECTIVE is a portmanteau of TRANSmissive and reFLECTIVE. A transflective LCD combines the best features of a reflective LCDs and transmissive LCDs. &nbsp; A transflective LCD will reflect ambient light, allowing it to be visible in normal office light without using a backlight. In bright sunlight, a transflective LCD is still visible and does not&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">transflective<\/a> displays use a combination of the reflective and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/transmissive-lcd\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"A transmissive LCD depends on light from its backlight being transmitted through the LCD to your eyes. Transmissive LCDs are always combined with a backlight. Transmissive LCDs can be seen easily in normal office lighting, and in darkness. Typically transmissive LCDs will not be visible in bright sunlight. It is possible to make a sunlight&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">transmissive<\/a> technologies to make sunlight readable displays with much less bright backlights.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/c\/sunlight-readable-displays\/38\">Sunlight readable displays<\/a> are a subset of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/daylight-readable\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"A daylight readable display is usable in bright indirect light. For a TFT, daylight readable tends to mean the backlight is at least 500 nits. Of course, transflective and reflective displays do not need strong backlights to be daylight readable.
