Inside the ePaper are very tiny charged and colored particles. The ePaper controller IC uses electric fields and clever algorithms to migrate the correct color particles to the front of the display, which creates an image. The particles and display structure are designed in such a way that once the particles have migrated to the desired position, they <em>will stay there indefinitely&ndash;without any power applied<\/em>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There is some power used when the image is written&ndash;but that power only needs to be supplied during the refresh cycle. As soon as the refresh cycle is complete, you can completely&nbsp;remove power from the module.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2>For the lowest possible ePaper average power consumption:<\/h2>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Make your updates as few as possible and as far apart as can meet your needs.<\/li>\n<li>Choose an ePaper that updates quickly (typically monochrome&ndash;color and grey scale have longer refresh times)<\/li>\n<li>Be sure to remove all power from the ePaper module.<br>\nOne method would be to use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/fet\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"A FET is a Field Effect Transistor. Typical FETs are nearly perfect switches. Next to no current flows when they are off, and they drop only minuscule voltage when they are on. An N-FET (N-Type Feild Effect Transistor) is typically used to switch a load to ground. The gate of a Logic Level N-FET can&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">FET<\/a> to disconnect the power pin completely while driving all the I\/O lines to ground.<br>\nAnother method would be to send the appropriate sleep commands to the ePaper module&rsquo;s controller.This may vary per controller, so feel free to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/contact.php\">contact Crystalfontz Technical Support<\/a> if you need any assistance with these commands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What other features make Crystalfontz ePaper modules an attractive display solution for embedded electronics?<\/h2>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>ePaper modules typically have <strong>much higher resolution<\/strong> than a similarly sized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/lcd\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. An LCD is composed of two pieces of glass with a thin layer of liquid crystals between the glass layers. When a voltage is applied to the glass, the orientation of the crystals can be changed. This change in the crystal's orientation (called polarization) will make either a dark&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">LCD<\/a>. This makes for crisp, easy-to-read text and images.<\/li>\n<li>ePaper is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/reflective-lcd\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"A reflective LCD depends on having sufficient ambient light to reflect in order to be read. A reflective LCD does not have a backlight and does not make any light on its own. &nbsp; A reflective LCD can be seen well in any lighting situation where you could read text on a paper, they are&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">reflective<\/a> technology, so <strong>no power is used to light up the display<\/strong>. The general rule is this: If you could read a piece of paper, you can read an ePaper display.<\/li>\n<li>Because ePaper is reflective, it is also <strong>sunlight readable<\/strong>. Unlike many embedded display technologies, more light makes it easier to read.<\/li>\n<li>If you absolutely must have a display that is readable in dark environments, <strong>we do have some frontlights available<\/strong> for selected ePaper modules. Be aware that the power consumed by the frontlight&nbsp;negates the embedded ePaper display module&rsquo;s primary advantage of low power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What are some limitations of ePaper?<\/h2>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The biggest limitation of ePaper is the <strong>refresh time<\/strong>. This can vary from less than 1\/10 second for partial-refresh monochrome ePaper modules to up to 20 seconds for color ePaper. During the refresh, the display typically flickers which can be distracting.<\/li>\n<li>ePaper <strong>colors are limited<\/strong>, currently, there are monochrome(black\/white), monochrome greyscale, and red\/black\/white and yellow\/black\/white. There are not any full-color embedded ePaper modules&nbsp;currently available.<\/li>\n<li>ePaper modules&nbsp;<strong>require a simple voltage boost power supply<\/strong> circuit. For larger&nbsp;production, you will want to design this circuit onto your PCB.
