Some of Crystalfontz's displays use a TAB style tail &nbsp;that should be soldered directly to corresponding pads on a PCB using a hot-bar soldering machine. High volume contract manufacturers will be familiar with this type of construction and its assembly methods.&nbsp;Hot-bar soldering machines designed for prototype, rework or repair&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">TAB<\/a> (Tape Automated Bonding)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>COF (Chip On Flex)<\/li>\n<li>and some COG (Chip On Glass) modules<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The benefit of this kind of construction is low cost &mdash; there is no connector involved at all, just the flex soldered directly down to the PCB. The drawback is that the machine used in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/lcd\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. An LCD is composed of two pieces of glass with a thin layer of liquid crystals between the glass layers. When a voltage is applied to the glass, the orientation of the crystals can be changed. This change in the crystal's orientation (called polarization) will make either a dark&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">LCD<\/a> manufacturing process to connect them is expensive, and they are near impossible to re-work.<\/p>\n<p>The connector is a TAB mated to a COF (Chip On Flex) style flex tail or a COG (Chip On Glass) LCD module construction.<\/p>\n<p>This style of connector is designed to be soldered directly to&nbsp;corresponding pads on your PCB by using a&nbsp;<em>hot-bar soldering machine<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>Hot Bar Soldering<\/h3>\n<p>High volume contract manufacturers will be familiar with this type of construction and its assembly methods.<\/p>\n<p>There are <a href=\"http:\/\/ape.com\/bondmaster-smd-9000\/\"><i>bondmaster<\/i>&nbsp;machines made by APE<\/a> that are designed for prototype, rework or repair work. We have had good experience with the APE Bondmaster, and their price is very reasonable ($US4K at last check).<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><em>Here are some other possible solutions:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manncorp.com\/hot-bar-soldering-pbs-series.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PBS Series Hot Bar Soldering Equipment<\/a> by Manncorp<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fancort.com\/Products\/Hot-Bar-Soldering-Bonding.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hot Bar Solding&nbsp;Machines<\/a> by Fancort&nbsp;Industries Inc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The process is as follows:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>The pads on the PCB are tinned.<\/li>\n<li>The tail is aligned to the PCB using the alignment holes or visually.<\/li>\n<li>The tail is held in place relative to the PCB with kapton tape.<\/li>\n<li>The bondmaster head is lowered, applying pressure between the tail and the PCB.<\/li>\n<li>The bondmaster is &ldquo;cycled&rdquo;, which means it heats up to the point of melting the solder and then cools down.<\/li>\n<li>The bondmaster head is raised.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Hand-Soldering the Tail to the PCB<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p>It is possible to hand solder the tail to the PCB. Great care must be taken since the conductors of the tail are completely exposed in the area where they are soldered.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a good example of hand soldering of a picture of a closed style tail.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_144\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-144\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-144 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/HotBar-Hand_Soldered.jpg\" alt=\"Hand-Soldered - crystalfontz.com\" width=\"1000\" height=\"925\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/HotBar-Hand_Soldered.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/HotBar-Hand_Soldered-300x278.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/HotBar-Hand_Soldered-768x710.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-144\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hand-Soldered Connector<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kapton tape should be used to secure the tail to the PCB, to insulate it and to reduce the chance of it flexing and breaking.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_143\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-143\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-143 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/HotBar-Hand_Soldered_With_Kapton_Tape.jpg\" alt=\"Hand-Soldered With Kapton Tape - crystalfontz.com\" width=\"1000\" height=\"925\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/HotBar-Hand_Soldered_With_Kapton_Tape.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/HotBar-Hand_Soldered_With_Kapton_Tape-300x278.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/HotBar-Hand_Soldered_With_Kapton_Tape-768x710.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hand-Soldered Connection Secured With Kapton Tape<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another approach uses ACF (<a href=\"http:\/\/multimedia.3m.com\/mws\/media\/296669O\/3mtm-anisotropic-conductive-film-adhesive-get-connected.pdf\">Anisotropic Conductive Film<\/a>) combined with heat and pressure to make the electrical connection between the flexible tail and the PCB.
