SPI is a simple serial bus that is often used by LCD or OLED controllers. SPI as implemented for OLED and LCD controllers typically uses a \"3-wire SPI\" or \"4-wire SPI\" scheme. The shiny pins on the display tail should point up when placed into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/zif\/\" target=\"_self\" title='ZIF is short for Zero Insertion Force and refers to a type of connector. This kind of connector is intended to be used with FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) or FFC (Flat Flexible Cable). Many of our display have \"ZIF tails\" that easily mate with a ZIF connector. To switch the interface, refer to the interface selection table (in the datasheet and printed on the back of the board). When the BS jumpers are open, BS1\/BS2 are low (0). Close the appropriate jumper to tie either line high as indicated in the interface selection table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/i2c\/\" target=\"_self\" title='I2C or IIC stands for \"Inter-Integrated Circuit,\" and was originally intended as a way to communicate from one IC to another, usually on the same PCB. I2C is a bi-directional serial bus that was originally created by Philips (now NXP). Detailed Definition In a typical I2C application, there will be one master, and one or&hellip;' class=\"encyclopedia\">I2C<\/a>, close the BS1=1 jumper and leave the BS2=1 jumper open. Our demo code uses SDA, so tie SDI and SDO  together by closing the SDA=SDA jumper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, wire the CFA10105 to the Seeeduino: power to power, ground to ground, RST to D9, D0 to A5, D1 (or D2) to A4. Don&rsquo;t forget to use pull-up resistors on the clock and data lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure I2C is the defined interface in the code, and upload it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>\/\/ Select the interface\n\/\/#define SPI_4_WIRE\n\/\/#define PAR_8080\n#define I2C<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"glasses\">Can I make glasses?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, we&rsquo;re not going to stop you! But when a display is placed close to the eye, special lenses and optics are needed to be able to focus on the display. You&rsquo;ll likely give yourself a headache trying to read anything displayed on these displays at a glasses distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We appreciated the <a href=\"https:\/\/community.arduboy.com\/t\/arduglasses\/9682\">Arduglasses built by Kevin Bates<\/a> and his description of them as &ldquo;a digital badge, just for your face.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zack Freedman goes in depth on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zZZ-Ea8RyjQ\">transparent OLED as a heads-up display in his video<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stack\">Can I stack a bunch of them together?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/crystalfontz-in-the-wild-volumetric-display\/\">Sean Hodgins did just that <\/a>and it looks great!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"other-versions\">Are there any plans to make higher resolution transparent OLED displays? A larger size? A flexible version? A curved version?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At this time we have no plans to add to our transparent OLED product line. If you are looking for production quantities (&gt;5,000) <a href=\"mailto:support@crystalfontz.com\">send us an email<\/a>. If you&rsquo;re looking for smaller quantities, send us a note <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.crystalfontz.com\/threads\/faq-transparent-oled-blog-post.5816\/\">in the forum<\/a> about what you&rsquo;re looking for. If enough people are interested in a display with the same characteristics, we may look in to expanding our selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"change-tail\">Can you move the tail? Can I get a longer tail? Shorter tail?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Changing the tail would be a complete redesign of the display. It would probably require a 10,000 piece first order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"outdoors\">Can the transparent display be used outdoors?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The brightness is a bit low to be called sunlight readable, but the display has a very high contrast ratio which helps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you look at the display directly, it is readable in sunlight, but it becomes unreadable at a small angle. It is invisible against a blue sky background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hello-world\">How can I send text using the Arduino IDE?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20210303_131051.jpg\" alt='The transparent OLED on the CFA10105 oled breakout board connected to a seeeduino. It can be installed in the Arduino IDE and is pretty simple to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&rsquo;s well documented here:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/olikraus\/u8g2\/wiki\/u8g2setupcpp\">https:\/\/github.com\/olikraus\/u8g2\/wiki\/u8g2setupcpp<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After installing the library, <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/olikraus\/u8g2\/wiki\/u8g2setupcpp#introduction\">run this sketch for a hello world right away<\/a>. Note the pinout used in this sketch is a bit different from what&rsquo;s used in our demo sketch. The settings for an image on the transparent can be seen in the image on the right.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"multiple-displays\">Can you run two screens off a device?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>That will depend on what interface you use and how many GPIOs you have available. The device can be transitioned between two I2C address, so you can address two separately. The datasheet is available here:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/products\/document\/4054\/CFAL12856A0-0151-B_Datasheet.pdf\">https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/products\/document\/4054\/CFAL12856A0-0151-B_Datasheet.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The I2C address can also be set on the CFA10105 using the SA0=1 jumper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dimmable\">Is the brightness adjustable? Are the screens dimmable? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, they are. Our sample code  is written for Arduino Uno compatible devices. Unfortunately, we cannot help rewrite code for different controllers. Fortunately, the controller used in the transparent OLED (SSD1309) is pretty common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&rsquo;s important to note that the transparent OLED is a 3.3v device.
