An LCD is composed of two pieces of glass with a thin layer of liquid crystals between the glass layers. When a voltage is applied to the glass, the orientation of the crystals can be changed. This change in the crystal's orientation (called polarization) will make either a dark&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">LCD<\/a> displays with a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/product\/cfag12864q1tfh-128x64-low-power-backlit-lcd-display\">family of 128&times;64 low power backlit LCDs<\/a>, but we have some of the Blue D3 displays left in stock. They&rsquo;re great displays with bright backlights and we have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/product\/cfag12864q1tfhe1-128x64-sunlight-readable-arduino-module\">Arduino-shield style breakout board<\/a> for them, so they&rsquo;re great for hobby builders! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A quick example project to emulate a die and timer is included below to get your ideas flowing. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/product\/cfa211tmi\">blue displays with shield are available here<\/a> at a lower price until we run out!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Die and Timer Emulator<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My family long ago lost the timer for one of our favorite games &ndash; Scattegories. This replacement timer also handles rolling the alphabet die, so no one has the (extremely minor) disadvantage of rolling the die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Components:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Just the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/product\/cfag12864q1tfhe1-128x64-sunlight-readable-arduino-module\">Seeeduino Shield Kit<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/crystalfontz\/CFAO12864D3-dice-timer\">sketch<\/a>! Nice and easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project Description<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This sketch runs automatically when power is applied. It &ldquo;rolls&rdquo; the letter then and begins a 99 second timer. When the timer finishes, the display flashes and says &ldquo;time&rsquo;s up!&rdquo;. In the below video, the timer has been sped way up:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls loop muted src=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20220404_160245_Trim.mp4\" playsinline><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Areas for growth:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This project is meant to get ideas flowing and there are lots of customizations and improvements to be made! Some ideas for improvements are listed below.
