An LCD is composed of two pieces of glass with a thin layer of liquid crystals between the glass layers. When a voltage is applied to the glass, the orientation of the crystals can be changed. This change in the crystal's orientation (called polarization) will make either a dark&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">LCD<\/a> display modules have been possible since 1987 when Hitachi introduced the HD44780 LCD controller. Since then, Hitachi no longer manufactures this integrated circuit (IC), but modern LCD controller ICs make it a point to be HD44780-compatible.<\/p>\n<h3>Controller Compatibility<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/products\/parametric.php?display_type=character&amp;chars=&amp;lines=&amp;coldots=&amp;rowdots=&amp;overall_w_mm=&amp;overall_w_in=&amp;overallWRestrict=&amp;overall_h_mm=&amp;overall_h_in=&amp;overallHRestrict=&amp;overall_d_mm=&amp;overall_d_in=&amp;overallDRestrict=&amp;controllers%5B%5D=Sitronix+ST7066U&amp;controllers%5B%5D=Sunplus+SPLC780D&amp;controllers%5B%5D=Winstar+Display+WS0010&amp;search=Search&amp;break=1&amp;price=\">character LCD display modules<\/a> offered by Crystalfontz America Inc. are no exception to this compatibility standard. This assures backwards compatibility with existing product infrastructure for our customers.<\/p>\n<h3>Finding Suitable Replacement LCDs<\/h3>\n<p>From time to time, we are asked to find a suitable replacement for an older LCD display. When our customer sent us the just-barely functional display in question to help verify we did have a compatible display we were delighted (in only the way Engineers can get delighted) that the old display had an old-school HD44780 controller.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"855\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-355\" src=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/HD44780_close_up.jpg\" alt=\"HD44780 Controller - crystalfontz.com\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/HD44780_close_up.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/HD44780_close_up-250x267.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/HD44780_close_up-768x821.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/HD44780_close_up-700x748.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/HD44780_close_up-120x128.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"><\/p>\n<p>Since the display was operational, we were able to find a suitable replacement for our customer. A few modifications were necessary to drive the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/backlight\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"A backlight is used behind the LCD glass to allow the LCM to be read in dark conditions. The vast majority of backlights are now LED. Historically there were also EL (electroluminescent) and CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light) backlights, but as LED efficiency has increased and cost has decreased, EL and CCFL backlights have all&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">backlight<\/a> properly in the device the display is for, but otherwise, the display was functionally the same, thanks to the HD44780 compatible controller.<\/p>\n<h3>LCD Manufacturing Through the Years<\/h3>\n<p>This gave us an opportunity to see the changes in how Character LCD displays are manufactured and assembled. The controller and drivers ICs are no longer discreet IC &mdash; they are bonded to the PCB and then covered with &lsquo;blobs&rdquo; to protect them.
