An LCD is composed of two pieces of glass with a thin layer of liquid crystals between the glass layers. When a voltage is applied to the glass, the orientation of the crystals can be changed. For instance, to&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">OLED<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;stands for&nbsp;Organic Light Emitting Diode<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do They Work?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TFT displays<\/strong>&nbsp;are also known as an &ldquo;Active Matrix TFT LCD module&rdquo; and have an array of thin film transistors fabricated on the glass that makes the LCD.&nbsp;There is one of these transistors for <em>each pixel<\/em> on the LCD. See our blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/rgb-and-color-depth\/\">RGB and Color Depth<\/a> for more on how TFTs show color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LCDs<\/strong> use voltage applied to a field of microscopic liquid crystals to change the crystal&rsquo;s orientation. The orientation of the crystals changes the polarization of the liquid crystal creating light or dark pixels on the display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These pixels are arranged to create characters or graphic images. This type of display may be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/sunlight-readable\/\" target=\"_self\" title='A sunlight-readable display can be read in direct sunlight. Often the term \"sunlight readable\" is used in reference to a TFT display having a super-bright backlight that overpowers the light of the sun to be visible. This typically occurs around 800 nits. However, other display technologies achieve sunlight readable status without trying to overpower the&hellip;' class=\"encyclopedia\">sunlight-readable<\/a> and may have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/backlight\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"A backlight is used behind the LCD glass to allow the LCM to be read in dark conditions. The vast majority of backlights are now LED. Historically there were also EL (electroluminescent) and CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light) backlights, but as LED efficiency has increased and cost has decreased, EL and CCFL backlights have all&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">backlight<\/a>, which allows it to be viewed in dark areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OLED<\/strong> displays are an <em>emissive<\/em> display technology. Each dot that is illuminated on the display is creating a small, bright area of glowing phosphor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advantages of Each<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>TFTs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Beautiful, complex&nbsp;images:<\/strong> All of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/c\/tft-lcd-displays\/25\">TFT modules<\/a> are full-color graphic displays. Unlike standard monochrome character displays, you can create complex images for an imaginative user experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/product\/cfaf320240h0035sc-320x240-capacitive-touchscreen-tft-display\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/CFAF320240H0-035SC_Front_On.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2100\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thin and light:<\/strong>&nbsp;These are ideal display modules for handheld devices, communications equipment, information displays, and test and measurement equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Single Supply:<\/strong> Most of the TFTs use an integrated controller with built-in voltage generation so only a single 3.3v supply is needed for both the panel power and logic voltage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LED Backlit:<\/strong> Most TFTs use white LEDs to backlight the display. The backlights of some TFT LCDs are bright enough to make them readable in sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LCDs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The term LCD is typically used to refer to a Passive Matrix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/stn\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"STN stands for Super-Twisted Nematic. STN is the commonly used LCD material in passive character and graphic LCDs.\" class=\"encyclopedia\">STN<\/a> LCD Module.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/c\/character-lcd-displays\/21\">character LCD modules<\/a> use a standard HD44780 compatible controller, so they can be quickly integrated into a new product or used as a replacement in your existing products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/c\/graphic-lcds-&amp;-oleds\/17\">graphic LCD display module<\/a> is typically required when the display of more than just text is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the LCD controllers on board our graphic LCD display modules also include a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/cgrom\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"CGROM&nbsp;stands for Character Generator ROM. The CGROM stores the font that is displayed on a character LCD. When you tell a character LCD to display the letter 'A', it needs to know which dots to turn on so that we see an 'A'. This information is stored in the CGROM. By definition, (since it is&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">CGROM<\/a> (character generator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/rom\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"ROM stands for Read Only Memory. This is memory that is factory pre-programmed to hold some data. We offer both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/c\/oled-displays\/graphic\/30\">Graphic OLEDs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/c\/oled-displays\/character\/34\">Character OLEDs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because OLEDs are emissive, these displays can always be used in dark environments. Additionally, OLEDs have extremely wide viewing angles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What makes OLEDs useful for display construction is that they can be fabricated in bulk.&nbsp;Using OLED fabrication techniques, all the diodes can be made at the same time, at a much lower cost.
