Often the term \"sunlight readable\" is used in reference to a TFT display having a super-bright backlight that overpowers the light of the sun to be visible. This typically occurs around 800 nits. However, other display technologies achieve sunlight readable status without trying to overpower the&hellip;' class=\"encyclopedia\">sunlight-readable<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/lcd\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. An LCD is composed of two pieces of glass with a thin layer of liquid crystals between the glass layers. When a voltage is applied to the glass, the orientation of the crystals can be changed. This change in the crystal's orientation (called polarization) will make either a dark&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">LCD<\/a> display.<\/p>\n<h3>What Makes a Display Readable in Bright Light?<\/h3>\n<p>There are two ways to get sunlight readability: 1) is to work with the sun, and 2) is to overpower the sunlight.<\/p>\n<h3>1) LCDs that Work With the Sun<\/h3>\n<p>Any character or graphic LCD (not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/tft\/\" target=\"_self\" title='TFT stands for Thin Film Transistor. TFTs are also known as \"Active Matrix TFT LCD modules\" and have an array of these thin film transistors fabricated on the glass that makes the LCD. There is one of these transistors for each pixel on the LCD. For a typical small color TFT LCD with a resolution&hellip;' class=\"encyclopedia\">TFT<\/a>, we will get to that in a bit) that is &ldquo;positive mode&rdquo; will be sunlight readable. In bright sunlight, a transflective LCD is still visible and does not&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">transflective<\/a> TFT modules.<\/p>\n<p>In dark environments up through office lighting, the TFT <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/backlight\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"A backlight is used behind the LCD glass to allow the LCM to be read in dark conditions. The vast majority of backlights are now LED. Historically there were also EL (electroluminescent) and CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light) backlights, but as LED efficiency has increased and cost has decreased, EL and CCFL backlights have all&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">backlight<\/a> makes them visible by being brighter than the environment, like all TFT modules.<\/p>\n<p>However, where regular (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crystalfontz.com\/blog\/glossary\/transmissive-lcd\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"A transmissive LCD depends on light from its backlight being transmitted through the LCD to your eyes. Transmissive LCDs are always combined with a backlight. Transmissive LCDs can be seen easily in normal office lighting, and in darkness. Typically transmissive LCDs will not be visible in bright sunlight.
