The CFAX12864U-TFH is an extremely low-power 128x64 graphic LCD display module. With the integrated white LED backlight, illuminating the display is no problem for low-light conditions. This display is perfectly suited for low-power, hand-held applications, or any application where power consumption or the requirement of a thin display is a must. With the row of icons at the top of the display, the display generates further interest by allowing you to have the icons shown without having to render them. The CFAX12864U-TFH also has an integrated controller, and the FFC is designed for inexpensive mass-production, with no need for a mating connector as the module and backlight connections solder directly to your PCB.

Summary: CFAX12864U and CFAX12864U1 series backlight improvements.
Description: The white LED backlight of the Crystalfontz CFAX12864U and CFAX12864U1 series of compact graphic display modules is changing as a result of manufacturing improvements of white LEDs and backlight assembly. The changes are as follows:

Forward voltage: Old value 3.5v -> new value 3.5v – NO CHANGE
Supply current (typical): Old value 48mA -> new value 40mA – 17% decrease
Luminosity (typical): Old value 150 cd/M^2 -> new value 570 cd/M^2 – 280% increase
Uniformity (typical): Old value 80% -> New value 90% - 12.5% increase

Note: With 16mA of supply current, luminosity is rated at 250 cd/M^2. This is a 66% decrease in current with a 66% increase in luminosity.
Display modules with a date code of 08/01/16 (August 01, 2016) will have the new backlight. Date code prior to 08/01/16 will have current backlight.

Reason: As part of our continuous improvement, design changes have been made to the white LED backlight of the CFAX12864U and CFAX12864U1 for improved luminosity, and reduced current profile.
Impact: Reduced current requirements values will effect current driving circuitry.

Increased luminosity values will effect visual appearance.

Recommendation: Test engineering samples when available to evaluate backlight circuitry changes and settings for visual consistency.
Availability: CFAX12864U and CFAX12864U1 display modules with new backlight should begin shipping at the end of Q3 2016.
Engineering samples for testing / validation will be available during this same time frame.
Price Change: No price change is currently scheduled.

Product Notes

This module is engineered for high volume production. It uses a "TAB" (tape automated bonding) or "COF" (chip on flex) style flex tail mated with a thin display. The TAB connector must be soldered directly to corresponding pads on your PCB using a hot-bar soldering machine, or bonded with anisotropic adhesive using heat and pressure. High volume contract manufacturers will be familiar with this type of construction and its assembly methods. Hot-bar soldering machines designed for prototype, rework or repair of TAB connections are available from equipment suppliers at reasonable cost. The TAB style connection requires no separate connector, so the cost is very low, and the ultra thin profile of the display is maintained. This same LCD is also available with FFC tail designed for ZIF connectors to allow its use in prototype and lower volume applications.
