Touch Screen Displays

Choose resistive when the operator wears heavy gloves, when a stylus or any hard object must work, when the surface will be wet or contaminated, or when cost matters more than feel. It is pressure-based, so it does not care what is pressing it. The trade-offs are single-touch operation, a softer film surface that scratches and wears, and lower optical clarity.

Choose capacitive or projected capacitive (PCAP) when you want multi-touch and gestures, a glass surface that survives cleaning and abrasion, and the best optical clarity. It senses a conductive object, so it needs a finger or a capacitive stylus, and it can be tuned for thin gloves at the cost of sensitivity.

For a wet environment specifically: unmodified PCAP registers water droplets as touches. A controller with water rejection solves most of it, but standing and running water are still difficult, and resistive remains the safer choice for washdown equipment.

It can, within limits. Glove operation on PCAP is a function of sensitivity tuning in the touch controller and of how thick and how conductive the glove is. Thin nitrile or latex usually works without changes. A thick insulated or leather glove usually needs a controller configured with a higher sensitivity profile, and that same profile makes the panel more susceptible to false touches from water and from electrical noise.

If the application is heavy gloves in the wet, resistive is the more reliable answer.

Surface capacitive. A single uniform conductive coating is applied to the panel and a small voltage is driven at its corners. A finger draws a tiny current from each corner, and the ratio of those four currents gives the touch position.

It differs from projected capacitive, which uses a patterned grid of electrodes in two layers, and from resistive, which uses two separated conductive layers that meet when pressed.

Surface capacitive is now uncommon in new designs: it is single-touch, needs bare-skin contact, and requires periodic recalibration.

The deciding factor is usually cleaning, not touch performance. PCAP behind a continuous glass front is the usual choice for anything wiped down with disinfectant, because the surface is non-porous and has no seams or membrane edge to trap fluid or degrade.

Resistive is still used where a gloved clinical user needs guaranteed actuation, and where the device is sleeved or draped anyway. The weakness is the film surface, which will eventually craze under repeated alcohol or quaternary-ammonium cleaning.
